Breakfast in the Classroom at ZISS

Dear Zilwaukee School Parents,

Saginaw Public Schools and SodexoMAGIC are conducting a pilot program for BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM at our school beginning Tuesday, March 13, 2012.  Starting Tuesday, March 13th, each student will be provided a free breakfast each morning that they will eat in the classroom with their teacher and classmates. We are excited to have the opportunity to implement this program along with Arthur Eddy Academy PreK-8 School. The following is information about why we are piloting Breakfast in the Classroom and the benefits our students will receive from this program.

Why Breakfast in the Classroom for the School District of the City of Saginaw?

There are more than 25 million children in our nations elementary and middle schools, many of whom come to school without eating a healthy breakfast.  What happens next is heartbreaking.  Their attention spans shorten.  Their energy levels plummet.  Their productivity wanes.  Learning suffers.  Lives suffer.

It’s a fact that eating breakfast at school helps children learn.  Studies show that children who eat breakfast at the start of their school day have higher math and reading scores.  They have sharper memory and show faster speed on cognitive tests.  They have broader vocabularies. They do better on standardized tests.  They focus better and behave better.

Eating breakfast at school has health benefits too.  Children are less likely to be absent. They’re less likely to see the school nurse and less likely to be overweight.  They eat more fruit, drink more milk and consume a wider variety of foods.

How It Will Work

We are asking that students arrive at school no earlier than 8:15 a.m., unless they ride a bus or are in the Before the Bell program.

Students will no longer go to the cafeteria for breakfast in the morning when they arrive at school.

ALL students will go directly to the gymnasium.

Students will be dismissed from the gymnasium at 8:25 a.m. to their classrooms.

It’s important that students arrive to school on time each morning to ensure that the program runs smoothly.

Due to the Breakfast in the Classroom Program, EARLY drop off is discouraged in order to ensure safety of students. Please do not drop off your child/ren to school prior to 8:15 a.m.

Thank You in Advance for Your Support!
